ME-MADE CLOSET CORE ELODIE

Closet Core Patterns - Elodie Wrap Dress

Sewing Pattern
The Elodie Wrap Dress from Closet Core Patterns is one of my go-to sewing patterns when I need a dress for a summer occasion. However, I was looking to make a wrap top rather a dress this time, and wondered if I could modify the Elodie pattern to do this.
Fabric Choice
On seeing The Citrus Orchard Marlie-Care Cotton Lawn fabric from Lady McElroy Fabrics, as soon as it came in stock; I knew I wanted to make something with it, and thought that a summery wrap top would suit the print well. At 85gsm, the lightweight fabric would hold its shape well with a bit of fluid drape.
Making up the garment
Modifying the pattern: Using the Elodie Wrap Dress sewing pattern, I decided to use View B, with the long sleeves option. I decided I didn't need to alter the pattern much, as I like how the pleat details sit at the waistline. So I just chose to deepen the waistband to 4 inches (to cover my waist more so it wouldn't be too cropped as a top), and make the belt thicker to match the depth of the new waistband size.
I cut my pattern out at Size 6 from bust to Size 8 at waist to meet my body measurements. Cutting out View B:
- 2 x C: Front Bodice
- 1 x D: Back Bodice on fold
- 2 x E: Front Facing (& 2 x interfacing)
- 1 x F: Back Facing on fold (& 1 interfacing on fold)
- 1 x J: Belt (adding 1.5" to make deeper/thicker)
- 4 x K: Front Waistband (& 2 interfacing) (I made the waistband thicker to 4")
- 2 x L: Back Waistband (& 1 interfacing) (I made the waistband thicker to 4")
My fabric at 140cm wide, I managed to cut all my pieces out within a 135cm length piece of fabric.
Making up the top was pretty straightforward, as I could follow the instructions of the Elodie Wrap Dress; ignoring the skirt construction parts. So it actually came together quite quickly!

Afterthoughts
I love the outcome of this, and I didn't have to faff around with buttons or buttonholes!!
The top makes for a cute holiday outfit, or just an everyday day top, worn with a camisole underneath. I can pair it with comfort jeans for daily wear, or a smarter trouser for a fancy dinner.
I will definitely make another one of these tops, although I would probably lengthen the bodice by 1", as well as adding another inch to the depth of the waistband, just to prevent the top becoming too cropped, or riding up whilst wearing.
I love that the pattern didn't require any complicated "hacks" to make it into a wearable top. Love a sewing pattern that offers options!
