Transportation used to ship your orders may burn fossil fuels and generate carbon emissions. These carbon emissions trap heat, leading to air pollution and global warming.
To help remove carbon emissions from the atmosphere, our shipping emissions are calculated, by cost, to neutralise them. These monies are used to fund innovative companies that pull carbon dioxide (CO2) out of the atmosphere and store it.
As greenhouse gases are reduced, the forest ecosystem and its wildlife inhabitants are protected through reforestation and soil carbon sequestration.

WHAT IS CARBON REMOVAL AND NEUTRALISING?
For example, if a truck or a plane that delivers your shipment releases 1 kg of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, Shopify and Planet ensures that 1kg of CO2 is also sucked from the atmosphere and stored away using solutions and technologies in Shopify Sustainability Fund.
There is a fast-growing and evolving sector with many carbon removal technologies in different stages of development. These technologies include nature-based solutions, such as reforestation and soil carbon sequestration and more high-tech solutions, such as direct air capture and mineralization.
- The models and estimates are not exact, but Planet overestimates your emissions to make sure that they are entirely removed.
- Planet only remove CO2 emissions. Other emissions, such as CH4, N2O, or GFG, are not removed. However, CO2 accounts for 95% of the climate impact from burning fossil fuels for transportation.

Planet is currently funding nature-based carbon removal solutions such as reforestation and soil carbon sequestration companies DroneSeed, Grassroots Carbon, and Pachama.
