Corozo is a 100% natural product - it comes from the nut of the tagua palm tree, which are only picked when fallen naturally. Every button has a unique, naturally forming grain meaning no button is the same in appearance.
Corozo originates from Tagua nuts which grow on Tropical Palm trees, most commonly found in Ecuador. The nuts themselves are 1-2 inches in diameter and a single tree can produce hundreds of nuts in just one year. The harvesting of these nuts provides a living for hundreds of people in the local villages. They are a great material for button production as they are protecting endangered rainforest lands whilst providing economic stability for local communities.
When a nut is taken from a tree it is in liquid form that slightly resembles diluted coconut water. Their natural colour is “off white” but they can be dyed to match any shade as required.
Corozo is made up of very tightly wound organic fibres which give it excellent durability and scratch resistance and gives a look similar in consistency to a hard resin. They were the popular button of choice way before plastics then took place.
Though Corozo buttons are machine washable, Corozo is a porous material and therefore, they should not be submerged under water for prolonged periods of time (e.g. 24 hours or longer) as warping may occur.
A dark grey colour, Slate Grey Corozo button has 4 holes, one side flat, the other slightly domed.
